The Office of the Auditor-General (OAG) hosted the 13th Inter-SAI1 event with its counterparts from Swaziland and Botswana Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) from 26th to 28th August 2016.
On the first day, participants were taken out of town to the beautiful southern part of Lesotho with a different environment. Some dancing and sporting activities took place. The second day was formal business at Thaba-Bosiu Cultural village.
In her welcome remarks, the Auditor-General, Mrs. Lucy Liphafa said it had always been beneficial to gather together to share ideas and experiences in order to improve performance in their respective offices.
This year’s formal presentations were based on Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) where different SAIs deliberated on how they are contributing towards their implementation.
Botswana SAI presented on SDG 6- ‘clean water and sanitation’ which strives to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. Swaziland SAI touched on SDG 13- ‘Climate Action’ which encourages need to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
A guest speaker from the Lesotho Ministry of Health deliberated on SDG 3-‘good health and well-being’. The presentation focused more on cancer screening for both men and women. Lesotho SAI then discussed the role of SAIs in auditing the SDGs. Presentations were cultural dances and songs from the 3 SAIs and excursion to Metolong dam.
A closing dinner which was the peak of the event was held at Lehakoe Recreation Club in Maseru. Participants enjoyed themselves and dance to the djz and artists’ fine music.
This celebration coincided with the BLS2 celebrations for their 50th anniversary since they got Independent for the British. The next Inter-SAI event will be held in Botswana in the coming year 2017.
